Closing Out 2017

Well, it's been a pretty crazy year, but overall, a pretty good one. We've seen record highs in US and Canadian Stocks and we've also seen the Indexes of a number of European Countries hit record highs too. On top of that, we've seen strong growth in the Emerging Markets in 2017. While we did see Interest Rates rise earlier in the year, the Bank of Canada did not raise rates again at the end of October. Bonds have stabilized since that time and job numbers in Canada have continued to go up this year.

There really has been a lot of good news to report out there with decent job growth in North America and US & Canadian Stocks rising nicely in September. Unfortunately, this kind of thing will take attention off of the positives.

A Tough Summer for So Many

While many of us have had a very good few months, it's been a very hard Summer for many across North America this year. The wildfires in British Columbia have impacted many areas and left so much destruction. Our hearts go out to all those who have been impacted.

Era of Rising Interest Rates

The recent increases in the Bank of Canada and Federal Reserve prime rate in the past few months signal the end of historically low interest rates. According to a Bank of England study released in early 2016, current low interest rates are the lowest in 5000 years of recorded history*!

Media reports in July pointed to a Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) report that warns the debt service ratio (the percentage of gross income needed to cover debt repayment costs) will move up by 3.5% by 2021 to 16.3% from the average of 12.9% seen between 1990 and 2017.
